The Alexander Technique enables you

-to reduce your tensions and pain, to improve your health and co-ordination, and

-to enhance your performance in chosen fields of endeavor - sports, dance, song, music, etc.

The Alexander Technique delivers these results by showing you how to utilize one of your most potent capacities, possessed by everyone, greatly underused by most, - your Force of Attention.

Attention is a force, emanating from your mind.  ÔMindÕ as used here is not merely brain; it is your storehouse of all your thoughts and feelings and sensations.

How and to what ends you direct your force of attention play a huge part in outcomes that shape your life.  You already direct your force of attention continuously, both consciously and unconsciously.  When directed unconsciously, outcomes will depend upon conditioning you have acquired unconsciously.  When directed consciously, your force of attention is likely to influence outcomes more beneficial to you and to others.

Directing your force of attention in a conscious manner for the benefit of yourself and others, this is a skill that can be cultivated and improved.  One key to improving this skill is to start with something easily accessible and relatively tangible, your own physical body.

The Alexander Technique begins with assisting you in directing your force of attention to how you ÔuseÕ your body, i.e. how you move and how you are at rest, improving your degree of ÔpoiseÕ, that is to say the appropriate degree of effort in any activity.  Less tension and pain, better health, co-ordination and performance, are natural benefits.  Having assisted you in improving your degree of poise, The Alexander Technique can also enable you in realizing other of your more complex aspirations.

A certified teacher of The Alexander Technique guides you in how to employ your force of attention in order to improve the manner in which you ÔuseÕ your body.  Because the skills required to foster and enable such improvement in another human being are both complex and subtle, a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique will have undergone full time training at an approved Alexander Technique teacher training school for a time period of no less than three years.  Thus trained, an Alexander teacher will be able to create with you an excellent chance of success in improving how you ÔuseÕ your body.
